Why Go For Counselling?

Sometimes, when things are hard, what we really need is a safe place to talk out loud: to be heard, and to know that we will not be judged or rejected for our words. A place we we can explore our feelings, behaviours, and relationships openly and without fear.

Counselling is one of these safe places. Sandra is a Professional Counsellor, which means that she is trained to listen, and to create a judgement-free zone for you to share your story.

She will also help you examine your thoughts and feelings, so that you can begin to understand yourself better. And will work with you to create better ways of coping with everyday situations, by managing your own thoughts and behaviour.

Specific Needs

Sandra has a lot of experience of working with teens, having been a school counsellor for 12 years. She has helped teenagers through many different kinds of difficulties, including:

school difficulties • bullying • depression • eating disorders (anorexia or bulimia) • anger • anxiety (general/social/test) • self-harm (cutting or feeling suicidal) • sexual abuse • stress • trauma • death of a loved one • issues with body image • bi-polar disorder • social skill deficits • self-esteem issues • family concerns (divorce, separation, blended family challenges)

What to Expect

Your first session with Sandra will last around 30minutes, and is completely free. This is a chance for you to get to know her a little, ask any questions, and begin to feel comfortable talking with her. It's also a time to cover any important paperwork, and for Sandra to explain your rights regarding confidentiality (ask a parent if you need an explanation of what this means).

If you go ahead with counselling, then you will probably meet with Sandra once per week or every two weeks. During these sessions, she will create a safe place for you to tell your story. Depending on your needs, she may use some different counselling techniques to help you out. Parents and older teenagers who want to know more about these techniques can read about them on the Counselling Techniques page

If you are open to it, Sandra will often give you homework or reading assignments to help you make the most of your counselling between sessions.
