Creating the Right Colour

We are all truly unique, with our own unique story. So the application of counselling techniques for each individual is completely determined by their circumstances and personality. Like mixing different coloured paints to achieve just the right effect.

Foundational to Sandra's approach is Psychotherapy (otherwise known as 'talk therapy'), which is essentially the establishment of a safe, non-judgemental, and objective or neutral place for you to talk openly.

However, she may also employ one or some of the following techniques:

  • Active listening and validation exercises - in order to work through high tension topics and improve communication skills.
  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) - A talk therapy that focusses on the development of personal coping strategies, targeting unhelpful patterns in thought, behaviour and emotion.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy - The main premise behind Psychodynamic Therapy is that our external behaviours are influenced by motives rooted in our unconscious. Simply put, this technique explores your family of origin, and other significant early-life relationships and experiences, in order to identify the roots of your present behaviours. The goal is to raise your self-awareness and create strategies to consciously move away from these behaviours, and more towards the person you want to be.
It is important to me that we craft a counselling experience that resonates with who you are and how you process. It is my job to figure out exactly how to do that.

Personal Development & Homework

It's important to understand from the get-go that, although counselling will provide further insight into your story, the onus for personal development lies with the individual.

In line with this, Sandra may give you homework assignments between counselling sessions. These will allow you to capitalize on your growth and learning opportunities outside of the counselling room, and help make the most of your therapy.

Optional Christian Counselling

Christian Counselling is a form of pastoral counselling that draws upon both psychology and biblical thought. For many, exploring questions of faith is an integral part of the healing journey. Sandra's background includes a Masters in Biblical Counselling. This type of counselling is available upon request.
