Why Family Counselling?

Being part of a family can give us a real sense of rootedness and help form our identity. But family life can be tricky, and the reasons are as varied and dynamic as the members of the family themselves.

Family counselling provides a safe environment for each family member to be heard and validated. It's a place where feelings, behaviours and thoughts be openly explored. Counselling can improve self-awareness, bring new perspectives, and equip us with better ways of communicating. It can also be a legitimate and helpful source of support during crisis.

Although not an exhaustive list, some of the reasons why families may seek counselling include:

  • Blending families - When two families become one they may need help bringing their different 'normals' together.

  • Separation or divorce - Children of separated or divorced parents may require help to cope with the emotional and psychological impact. Critical to this is having a place where they can feel safe to express their feelings on the situation.

  • Substance abuse - Whether by a parent or a child. Generally the whole family is affected by this and therefore requires support through it.

  • Illness or death in the family -  Such as a parent, child or close relative. Again, providing a safe place to openly express feelings is critical to the process of bereavement.

Initial Consultation

Your first session with Sandra will last around 30minutes, and is completely free. This is a chance for you to get to know her a little, ask any questions, and begin to feel comfortable talking with her. It's also a time to cover any important paperwork, and for Sandra to explain your rights regarding confidentiality.

By the end of the initial consultation Sandra should be able to give you a better idea of how she can help. And collaboratively you will form a counselling plan.

Note that, should parents or the counsellor have concerns about comprehensive needs regarding the emotional health of young children (12 and under), a referral will be made to a child counselling specialist.

Counselling Process & Techniques

If you decide to go ahead with counselling, then you will probably meet with Sandra once per week or every two weeks. During these sessions she will help facilitate an environment where the whole family can be involved, and may at times create sessions with specific family members.

Depending on your needs, she may employ a mix of counselling techniques. Parents and older teenagers who want to know more about these can read the Counselling Techniques page

Family Development & Homework

Sandra may assign you homework between counselling sessions. This will allow you to capitalize on your growth outside of the counselling room. Homework is optional, but very much recommended, in order to make the most of your counselling.

Optional Christian Counselling

Christian Counselling is a form of pastoral counselling that draws upon both psychology and biblical thought. For many, exploring questions of faith is an integral part of the healing journey. Sandra's background includes a Masters in Biblical Counselling. This type of counselling is available upon request.
